Recently, with the support of Carbon Newture, Huizhou Yuansheng Bicycle Parts Co., Ltd. completed the carbon footprint assessment of its bicycle rear derailleur products and received certification from the authoritative third-party organization, SGS.

Yuansheng Earns Product Carbon Footprint Certification

Previously, with the assistance of Carbon Newture, Yuansheng had conducted an organizational-level carbon inventory and received certification from an authoritative third-party organization. The company’s green initiatives are not only in response to the requirements of supply chain lead enterprises like Giant and Decathlon, but also represent a forward-looking strategy to tap into China’s rapidly growing green and low-carbon cycling market.

supporting microSHIFT’s low-carbon development

Established in 2009, Huizhou Yuansheng Bicycle Parts Co., Ltd. is the sole subsidiary of Taiwan’s microSHIFT company in mainland China. microSHIFT is a globally recognized bicycle transmission system brand, specializing in the research, design, and manufacture of bicycle transmission systems and related components. Its product line covers both road bicycles (Road) and mountain bikes (MTB) and is highly regarded in both the bicycle OEM (original equipment manufacturer) and retail markets.

Take Giant, for example: as a company committed to sustainability, Giant has already undertaken practices in green production and carbon emission accounting.

In 2022, Giant’s parent company, the Giant Group, launched its ESG strategy, "Cycling for a Better Future," which includes innovative low-carbon living among its three main goals. As a brand under the Giant Group, Giant has made sustainability a key strategic focus, aiming to integrate ESG principles into its core business and promote sustainable operations with the "Cycling for a Better Future" theme, emphasizing the energy-saving and low-carbon features of bicycles and creating the best commuting and fitness model for the future.

As a supply chain lead enterprise, Giant actively conducts product carbon footprint accounting and certification, and has encouraged upstream suppliers such as microSHIFT and Yuansheng to carry out carbon footprint assessments and certifications for their components.

At the 2023 China International Bicycle Exhibition, Giant publicly disclosed the product carbon footprint for the Stance 29 1, which was 159 KgCO₂e, covering all five life stages of the product (raw material acquisition, manufacturing, transportation, product use, and end-of-life disposal), and received SGS third-party certification on February 21, 2023. Building on this, the Giant Group began to accelerate the comprehensive carbon calculation of bicycle products, working with the entire industry chain to create a low-carbon manufacturing model.

Giant Publicly Discloses Stance 29 1 Product Carbon Footprint

At the 2024 China International Bicycle Exhibition, Giant debuted its "A Trail to Zero" section, introducing innovative low-carbon products made from environmentally friendly materials. The carbon footprint assessment for the popular TCR Advanced Pro 0 model was revealed to be 274 KgCO₂e.

This carbon footprint assessment covers the entire product lifecycle, including raw material acquisition, manufacturing, transportation, product use, and end-of-life disposal. In addition, through carbon hotspot analysis, Giant identified materials with the highest carbon emissions in the raw materials, and after adjustments, effectively accelerated carbon reduction efforts. In the future, Giant will actively apply for carbon footprint labels and prioritize carbon emission hotspots to achieve carbon reduction goals.

Giant "A Trail to Zero" ESG Section

Cycling is not only a sport but is also expected to become one of the mainstream lifestyles for energy saving and carbon reduction in the future.

Yuansheng, microSHIFT, and their brand client, Giant, view sustainable development as their mission, striving to ensure that every rider enjoys low-carbon, environmentally friendly, and high-quality cycling gear, leading the bicycle industry toward a green transformation and achieving the goals of environmental protection and sustainable development.
