As the global climate crisis accelerates, and the world enters a pivotal period of transformation in the climate governance process, the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) is set to take place in Dubai, UAE, from November 30 to December 12 this year.
The climate diplomacy choices of China and the United States will have a profound impact on global climate governance. Prior to COP28, from November 4 to 7, both countries engaged in climate talks focusing on bilateral climate action, cooperation, and support for the success of COP28 in alignment with the spirit of the Bali Summit between their leaders. On November 7, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment issued the "Methane Emission Control Action Plan," a significant effort in response to the China-U.S. Joint Declaration reached at COP26 in Glasgow. This may indicate that a significant climate agreement between China and the United States is on the horizon at COP28.
CarbonNewture will be a part of the United Nations Climate Change Conference. Recently, it successfully secured a spot in the "NEX COP28 CLIMATE TECH STARTUP ACCELERATOR" launched by the COP28 UAE Presidency and New Energy Nexus. The selected companies (including six from mainland China) will engage in on-site exchanges with UAE partners at COP28, aiming to build a global climate technology ecosystem. This article provides a preliminary understanding of COP28 and the NEX COP28 Climate Technology Startup Accelerator.
About COP28
COP, short for Conference of the Parties, also known as the United Nations Climate Change Conference, is an abbreviation for the meeting of the parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The UNFCCC is the world's first international treaty aimed at controlling greenhouse gas emissions and addressing global warming. Adopted at the United Nations headquarters in New York in 1992 and in effect since 1994, it currently has 197 sovereign countries as parties. Since 1995, the parties have convened annually for the COP to assess progress in addressing climate change, establish legally binding greenhouse gas emission targets, and determine implementation mechanisms. The COP is the largest and most significant annual global climate-related conference, held in different cities worldwide each year. The overarching goal is to address climate change issues, but the specific agenda may vary. In 2023, the conference marks its 28th year, hence referred to as COP28.
